Great potential in Peru

17/06/2009A small group of Christian students in south eastern Peru are sacrificing their Sunday sleep-ins to run a new children’s club with BMS World Mission’s Scott and Anjanette Williamson.

The inaugural kids activity morning took place last Sunday (14 June) in a rented room in a residential area of Cusco called Ucchullo Grande, close to the main state university.

Scott says the foundations are there for the group to grow. “Typically, we started late and many who said they would come didn't but hopefully, as word gets around, more will come.

“Veronica and Maxi, the students who led the group with us, did brilliantly and the children had a lot of fun together – they absolutely loved the parachute!”

Taking off
Scott and Anjanette and their two children, Jess and Sam, moved to Cusco in March after language study in Arequipa since last September.

Scott admits their work with the students is really only just beginning to take off – and explains that the community outreach is a central part of that.
Cusco is a city of 350,000 people and a popular tourist destination, best-known for being the historic capital of the Inca Empire. It is also the spot on Earth with the highest ultraviolet light level!
He says, “One year ago a small group of Baptist students started meeting together for prayer and Bible study as currently there is no official Peruvian Baptist Convention church here.

“The group has met on and off since and consists of about ten students.

“They really wanted to start up the children’s ministry to reach out to local children they often see playing in the street.

“Our aim is to then run midweek activities such as chess club, film club, Bible study and maybe a football game”.

Huge potential

The student group spends Sunday afternoons together for worship and prayer, and Scott and Anjanette are leading a course with them about sharing faith with friends.
Praying
Scott is really excited by the future of the group. He says, “The students will be responsible for running each of the different activities and there is huge potential.

“As we start our ministry here in Cusco it is great to have a small group of young believers to work with. Please pray with us as we begin this exciting project.”

Bible reading
Please also pray:

  • That more children will come to the Sunday morning club in future weeks.
  • That Scott, Anjanette and the students will be able to share God's love with local children and their parents – and for good communication skills!
  • For the four Peruvian gap year workers from the Convention's Radical Peru programme who arrive in August to support the work for three months.
  • For a new café church project which the Williamsons are planning.
