The Deloitte Street Child World Cup kicks off next Monday (15 March) with BMS–supported Team Nicaragua hunting glory in South Africa.
Nicaragua is one of eight countries taking part in the tournament in Durban, which aims to raise the issue of street children in a major way and advocate for their basic rights.
Aside from the football, which runs throughout the week-long event, there will also be art workshops, interaction with local schools and presentations. BMS worker Dan Pratt will be involved in outreach with local Baptist churches.
The Nicaragua team comprises boys and girls helped by BMS’ partner Casa Alianza. Teenagers like Wendy (below), who used to take drugs on the streets of the capital, Managua. Today she is studying, with the dream of becoming a lawyer.
She says, “I don’t feel like that same person anymore. Now I know that street life will only hold me back. I feel like the people at Casa Alianza and genuinely care want to help me.
“I am so excited to be selected to represent the street girls of Nicaragua. What I am most looking forward to is meeting other boys and girls from different countries and learning a little about other cultures.
“I want to tell them what Nicaragua is like – that we’re very happy people and proud to live in this country.”
Wendy’s full story, plus other player profiles, are now available to individuals and churches who have already pledged their support to the team.
Team Nicaragua supporters should also look out for regular reports from our man in Durban, Mark Craig, during the tournament.
