For millions of football fans, John Motson – or ‘Motty’ – is the voice of football with a career spanning over 40 years and 2,000 matches.
How exciting then when he offered his skills to BMS World Mission to be the voiceover for our new resource, Onside, which will include international footballers sharing their faith, and features from the Street Child World Cup to be held in Durban South Africa in March 2010.
After a BMS film crew recorded John in his home, he wanted to know more about the work BMS does with disadvantaged children across the world.
John was even willing to offer as prizes a signed copy of his book, 40 years in the commentary box and a signed match day card of the recent Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa game for those who win Motty’s quiz hosted on the BMS website.
Appreciation must also go to Stuart Weir, the executive director of Verité Sport, who arranged our visit to John Motson and for providing the footage of footballer interviews with Kaká (Brazil), Marcos Senna (Spain) and Cyrille Dormoraud (Cote d’Ivoire).
Onside will be released at the end of May and will be ideal for showing at evangelistic church events during the FIFA World Cup coverage in June. Motty’s quiz will be on the BMS website during that month.
