Great jubilation in Guinea
26/06/2008
BMS worker in Guinea, Eric Bafende tells the story of a young man he knows through a football ministry and how he came to faith.
The sun has set, the insects start their nightly music, the town prepares to sleep and Campus for Christ crank up their generator!
“Hallelujah” they cry into their microphone. There’s no sleep possible for the next few hours.
The pastor preaches – some of his words drift through the bedroom window but not so that I can really hear them.
And then a rapt silence.
It’s 5.30 in the morning and the telephone rings. ‘S’ is crying, babbling as he explains to me about his night.
“Papa,” he says, “I’ve had a terrible night. I can’t stop crying. I watched the
Jesus
film. To think that he did all of that just for me.”
He sobs into the phone. “Papa, if he did all of that for me, then I just have to say yes to him. I’ve given my life to Jesus.” Great jubilation!
‘S’ is an 18 year-old lad from a family with traditional African beliefs.
For the last two years, we have been talking together, discussing all sorts of things – life, school and of course football!
Now our times together have a different direction. I have the wonder of mentoring him as he takes his first steps as a new creation in Jesus.
His new-found joy is evident and my prayer for him is that not only will knowing Jesus bring him deep peace but that his family will be drawn by the love of Jesus to accept him in their lives too.
